School of Geosciences
Faculty of Science
Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor
in Environmental Geography
Reference No. 080/0609
The School of Geosciences is home to a dynamic and varied group of disciplines made up of Geography, Geology & Geophysics, Marine Science and Environmental Studies. Geography at the University of Sydney dates back to 1920, when Griffith Taylor was appointed as the foundation head of the first Department of Geography in Australia, establishing a longstanding tradition of teaching and scholarship on the environment.
The School is now seeking to make an academic appointment to undertake research and teaching in Environmental Geography. The successful applicant will (i) have expertise in one or more of the following areas: environmental governance and planning, environmental impact assessment, sustainability (in urban, regional or rural environments), and risk and resilience to climate change; (ii) possess the capability to manage the teaching of GIS applications as part of undergraduate courses; (iii) be willing and able to work collaboratively with other academic staff in the School of Geosciences, and (iv) apply their research expertise to funded research initiatives in Australian and Asia-Pacific contexts.
In addition to this the successful applicant will be expected to make a significant collaborative contribution to the research strengths of the School and cognate disciplines, including through active pursuit of competitive research grants, supervision of research students, and regular publication in high standard journals. The level of the appointment will depend on a track record relative to opportunity that involves a significant research output and impact; plus significant research collaboration, success in routinely attracting competitive grants and mentoring of research students and staff at the Senior Lecturer level; plus a capacity to build and lead a successful research group at the Associate Professor level.
The position is full-time, continuing subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period and confirmation period for new appointees. Membership of a University approved superannuation scheme is a condition of employment for new appointees.
Level of appointment and responsibility will be commensurate with skills and experience. Some relocation cost support will be provided and visa sponsorship will be available for the successful appointee if required.
All applications must be completed online. To be considered applicants must respond to selection criteria, do so on a separate document and attach it to your application along with your resume, including a list of publications and the contact details of three referees.
