Maersk Oil Chair in Applied Geophysics

The Department of Geoscience, Aarhus University, invites applications for a 5-years industry funded position at the Professor level within the reflection seismic method and its applications to basin analysis, including hydrocarbon related issues. Continuation of the position beyond the 5-year period is negotiable.

As part of the strategic planning of the Faculty of Science and Technology, The Department of Geoscience at present is in the process of renewing its profile through recruitments of new faculty members. The ambition of the Department is to excel within the general themes ofDeep Earth Processes, Earth Surface Processes, Past Climate and Ocean Systems, Hydrogeological Systems, and Computational Earth Science. The new departmental profile will match the structure of the Faculty of Science and Technology and the University as a whole, which is meant to facilitate interdisciplinary cooperation across faculties and institutes. Geoscience is expected to develop strong relationships with e.g. Physics and Astronomy, Chemistry, Engineering, Bioscience, Environmental Science, and Computer Science.

The appointee will have a strong background in research and application centred on the reflection seismic method and its application to a range of geoscience problems such as e.g. the relationship between rock and fluid properties and seismic signature. The applicant is expected to apply both field and analytical work in hypothesis testing. Other important qualifications include abilities to establish strong international collaboration and to attract funding and material support (data, software, equipment) from national and international sources, including industry, in a highly competitive environment. The department has a long tradition for industry cooperation and both applicants with an industrial and/or an academic background are welcomed.

The reflection seismic method and its applications have been central to the Department of Geoscience for more than three decades, and further development of the reflection seismic method in research and teaching is a focus point of the department. The appointee therefore is expected to define the focus and set the direction of research and teaching within applied geophysics. The appointee will be part of a multidisciplinary research environment, and is expected to engage in collaboration with groups within the department and within the university. Furthermore, the appointee will be expected to teach courses within applied geophysics (e.g. signal processing and seismic acquisition and processing) at all university levels (BSc, MSc and PhD level). The Department also has strong traditions with the use of inverse methods. Documented teaching skills will be required.

The department has equipment for on and offshore reflection seismic acquisition as well as for processing and interpretation. The equipment and processing systems are supported by permanent technical and academic staff. Facilities for high-performance scientific computing are available. Aarhus University's new research vessel supports the marine seismic equipment. The shallow land seismic acquisition system is based on a vibrator truck. A project allowance is attached to the chair in order to ensure a smooth transition.
