Geoscience Australia's Groundwater Branch is responsible for providing hydrogeoscience information and knowledge to support Australian Government policies and decision making. The Branch undertakes a range of strategic science and advice activities in collaboration with State/Territory and other Commonwealth government agencies, aimed at improving understanding of groundwater systems and processes across Australia.

The Branch is seeking an experienced Basin Analyst/Sedimentologist who will lead and deliver basin analysis studies to understand depositional and tectonic environments, and the controls of basin formation and evolution on groundwater systems. As a senior scientist within the Branch, the candidate will develop and lead aspects of regional groundwater projects, work collaboratively with a range of internal and external partners, mentor team members and communicate effectively in a range of forums.

Our Ideal Candidate

To be successful in the role you will have:

  • postgraduate qualifications in basin analysis/sedimentology, or relevant experience in this geoscience discipline.
  • extensive experience in regional sedimentary basin analysis with a focus on the interpretation of well/borehole and geophysical data to understand tectonic and depositional environments, to build tectonostratigraphic and paleogeographic frameworks.
  • experience in examining groundwater characteristics within sedimentary basins and alluvial systems.
  • well-developed interpersonal communication skills that enable you to engage external and internal stakeholders, work effectively in a multidisciplinary team, and cultivate positive team dynamics.

Eligibility

  • to be eligible for this position you must be an Australian Citizen at the closing date of application.
  • the successful applicant must be able to obtain and maintain a Baseline level security clearance or hold a current security clearance of an appropriate level.
  • commencement of employment is subject to the successful applicant undergoing and satisfying a police history check.
