Geoscience Australia's Groundwater Branch is responsible for providing geospatial, geoscientific and hydrological information and knowledge to support Australian Government policies and decision making. The Branch undertakes a range of strategic and regional applied science activities in collaboration with State/Territory and other Commonwealth government agencies, aimed at improving understanding of groundwater systems and processes across Australia.

The Branch is seeking an Airborne Electromagnetic (AEM) Geophysicist who, in close collaboration with the Groundwater Branch Senior Leadership Team and other senior geophysical staff in the agency, will be responsible for AEM contract development and management for the Groundwater Branch. As part of a multi-disciplinary team, the candidate will be responsible for the geophysical elements of AEM-based projects in the Groundwater Branch. The successful applicant will work collaboratively with a range of internal and external partners, and communicate effectively in a range of forums.

Our Ideal Candidate

To be successful in the role you will have:

  • postgraduate qualifications in geophysics, mainly electromagnetic methods, and significant industry or research experience in the application of AEM technologies to near-surface geophysics and/or groundwater issues.
  • experience in AEM contract management, AEM data Qa/Qc, and/or the acquisition and delivery of high-quality AEM conductivity data.
  • the ability to use exploration geophysics (e.g., Geosoft, Profile Analyst, Interpid) and GIS and visualization (e.g. ArcGIS, GoCAD) software tools.
  • experience in the integration of AEM data with other hydrogeophysics technologies, and geological and hydrogeological datasets.
  • skills in Linux and scripting in MATLAB (or similar high end language) for program integration.
  • experience and knowledge on the use of potential field geophysics and seismic reflection methods is desirable.
  • well-developed interpersonal communication skills that enable you to engage external and internal stakeholders, work effectively in a multidisciplinary team, and cultivate positive team dynamics.

Eligibility

  • to be eligible for this position you must be an Australian Citizen at the closing date of application.
  • the successful applicant must be able to obtain and maintain a Baseline level security clearance or hold a current security clearance of an appropriate level.
  • commencement of employment is subject to the successful applicant undergoing and satisfying a police history check.
