The Groundwater Branch is responsible for providing geospatial, geoscientific and hydrological information and knowledge to support Australian Government policies and decision making. The Branch undertakes a range of strategic and regional applied science and advice activities in collaboration with State/Territory and other Commonwealth government agencies, aimed at improving understanding of groundwater systems and processes across Australia.

The Branch is seeking a senior Airborne Electromagnetic (AEM) Geophysicist who will provide strategic geophysical leadership, including the development and implementation of AEM inversion codes and interpretations together with other hydrogeophysical techniques, for groundwater investigations. As a senior scientist within the Branch, the candidate will develop and lead aspects of strategic and regional groundwater projects, work collaboratively with a range of internal and external partners, mentor team members and communicate effectively in a range of forums.

Our Ideal Candidate

To be successful in the role you will have:

  • post-graduate qualifications in geophysics, mainly electromagnetic methods, and recent high-level research experience in the development and application of AEM inversion codes and the application of AEM technologies to near-surface geophysics and/or groundwater issues.
  • extensive current experience in scientific innovation including the integration of AEM and other hydrogeophysical techniques, geology and hydrogeology, for groundwater investigations.
  • significant experience in project and contract management and the development of project proposals, and an excellent track record in project delivery.
  • a working knowledge of potential field and seismic reflection geophysical techniques.
  • well-developed interpersonal communication skills that enable you to engage external and internal stakeholders, work effectively in a multidisciplinary team, and cultivate positive team dynamics.
  • Skills in Linux and scripting in MATLAB (or similar high end language) for program integration would be desirable


The successful applicant must be able to obtain and maintain a Baseline level security clearance or hold a current security clearance of an appropriate level.
