Geoscience Australia is seeking two Seismologists to work within the Geodesy and Seismic Monitoring Branch.

As the Seismologist (Nuclear Monitoring) you will undertake research in seismology in support of the work of the Nuclear Monitoring Section with the goal of enhancing the section's capability to detect, locate and evaluate possible nuclear weapons tests from seismo-acoustic time series data. The Section provides technical advice and support to the Australian Government in matters relating to the detection and evaluation of possible nuclear weapons tests and the establishment of the verification regime for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty.

The role requires an advanced degree in the physical sciences, preferably PhD level.

As the Earthquake Alerts and Tsunami Warning Duty Seismologist you will work as a member of the operations team and will undertake rostered shift-work. You must be able to work unsupervised and with minimal assistance throughout rostered hours. You will possess sound scientific skills; be able to capably undertake rapid, robust earthquake analysis; and rapidly provide quality advice to stakeholders, including the media. Through team and individual project work you will contribute to evaluating system performance; undertake quality control of Geoscience Australia's earthquake catalogue; and evaluate new analysis techniques and tools. You will represent the section through media interviews, public tours and presentations.

The role requires tertiary qualifications (BSc or higher degree) with a relevant background in earthquake seismology, geology, geophysics, or related field.

Eligibility

The successful applicant must be able to obtain and maintain a Baseline level security clearance or hold a current security clearance of an appropriate level.

Commencement of employment is subject to the successful applicant undergoing and satisfying a police history check.
