The University of Alberta
Department of Physics
Two Postdoctoral Research Fellows in Exploration Seismology and Statistical Signal Processing
Research is in the topic of statistical signal processing for the quality enhancement of controlled-source
seismic data. Specific techniques to be applied are independent component analysis and statistical signal estimation.
Position 1: Simultaneous shot acquisition and post-acquisition separation
Research will be in the use of independent component analysis to separate simultaneously acquired seismic shot records. The main focus of this project will be to develop suitable strategies for the separation of simultaneously acquired shots and recommend appropriate modifications of current acquisition strategies to reduce their cost without compromising data quality. Successful applications are likely to have a far-reaching impact on future seismic acquisition strategies by all major operators.
Position 2: Statistical wavelet analysis without well control for phase and attenuation analysis
Research will be in the topic of statistical signal estimation. The main focus of this project will be on the estimation of stable statistically-derived wavelets from surface seismic, away from well control, that are consistent with rigorously derived wavelets at well locations. These wavelets can subsequently be employed for deconvolution or as an interpretative diagnostic.
General information and application procedure
Both postdoctoral positions are available immediately. The initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of renewal for a second year. The successful applicant will become part of a research consortium sponsored by the oil industry. There will be a strong interaction with the sponsors.
Applicants should have a PhD and research experience in exploration seismology and/or signal processing.
Applicants should submit a CV, list of publications, and a statement of research interests, and should arrange for three letters of reference to be sent directly to the Department. All application materials should be sent by email or by post to Professor Mirko van der Baan, Department of Physics, 11322 - 89 Avenue, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, T6G 2G7, Canada. Email: Mirko.vanderBaan@ualberta.ca.
Information on the department can be found at http://www.phys.ualberta.ca.
Evaluation of applications will commence: 5 January 2010.
The University of Alberta welcomes diversity and encourages applications from all qualified women and men, including persons with disabilities, members of visible minorities, and Aboriginal persons.
