Postdoctoral Fellow/ Research Fellow in Inverse Geodynamics

The Research School of Earth Sciences (RSES) at the Australian National University (ANU) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow/ Research Fellow in inverse geodynamics. The goal is a reconstruction of the thermo-chemical state of Earth's mantle, in space and time. The position will focus upon the computational development, validation and application of inverse methods that allow present-day and time-dependent observations to be propagated backward through geological history, together with their uncertainties.
The position will be based at RSES, under the supervision of Dr Rhodri Davies. The successful applicant will also work closely with Prof. Malcolm Sambridge and Dr Andrew Valentine, and will interact with the National Computational Infrastructure (NCI), based at the ANU.
The successful applicant will hold a PhD (or awarding of a PhD within six months of appointment commencement) in Earth sciences, computational geodynamics, applied mathematics, inverse methods, numerical methods, machine-learning or a related area. Proficiency in at least two common programming languages, such as scientific Python, C/C++, or F90, is desirable, as is knowledge of parallel programming and high-performance computing. Experience with geophysical inversion and the development and validation of computational models is highly desirable. The successful applicant will have demonstrated a strong interest in geodynamics, in addition to the capacity for inter-disciplinary research. Candidates should demonstrate an emerging/excellent publication record relative to opportunity.
