The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.

The Section Geophysics invites applications for an

Engineer or Master of Science

in geomatics, geodesy or geo-informatics (preferably with a focus on hydrography)


Data collection with multibeam echosounder systems installed on the research vessels of the institute. Work focuses on the data collection with the RV Polarstern in high latitudes. The job specifications cover the entire workflow from data acquisition to long-term data archiving. More specifically the tasks are:

  • The technical support of the multibeam echosounder installed on the RV Polarstern
  • The planning and execution of surveys, data processing and the production of maps to support scientific activities during research expeditions
  • The close cooperation with working groups and programmes at the AWI including marine geology, geophysics, biology and hydrography working groups
  • The production of bathymetric maps and digital bathymetric models for subsequent interpretations
  • The continuation of the IT-concept for the acquisition, processing and archiving of multibeam data at the institute
  • Maintenance of the relevant hard and software on board of the research vessel and at the institute


  • Experience with hydrographic surveys
  • Good knowledge of the software Caris HIPS/SIPS, QPS Fledermaus und ESRI ArcGis
  • English skills
  • Willingness and ability to participate in research expeditions up to several month
  • Good general knowledge of computers and the MS Windows operating system as well as experience with Unix or Linux
  • Knowledge of at least one programming language for the maintenance of software at the institute and for some programming work

The position is initially limited to two years, with the potential to become a permanent employment. The salary will be paid in accordance with the German Tarifvertrag des öffentlichen Dienstes (TVöD Bund), salary level 13 . The place of employment will be Bremerhaven.
