Research fellow (PhD candidate) in solid earth seismology
The Department of Earth Science has a vacancy for a research fellow (PhD candidate) in the field of solid earth seismology for a period of 4 years.
We are seeking a highly motivated candidate to conduct research as part of a PhD study aimed at understanding the nature and distribution of seismic interfaces in the continental lithosphere. This study will involve the development and implementation of routines to compute detailed receiver function profiles using seismic data recorded at permanent and temporary broadband stations worldwide. The seismic results will be interpreted in conjunction with constraints from complementary fields in the earth sciences such as tectonics, geodynamics, rock physics, petrology and geochemistry.
Applicants must have achieved a master's degree or equivalent in earth science that is relevant to the PhD topic, or have submitted their master thesis for assessment by the application deadline. It is a prerequisite, however, that the formal admission requirements for the PhD programme are met before appointment can be made.
Applicants should submit a brief (1 page) statement of their research experience and intended research goals within the scope of this PhD study. This and other application materials should demonstrate that the candidate possesses good skills in mathematics, programming and communication. Experience with code development in seismic imaging and a demonstrated interest in solid earth sciences are an advantage.
The research fellow must take part in the University's approved PhD programme leading to the degree within a time limit of 3 years. Application for admission to the PhD programme, including a project plan outline for the training module, will be worked out in collaboration with the supervisory committee.
In total, the fellowship period is 4 years. For positions with a 4-year duration 25 pct of the period will be designated to teaching and/or administrative duties. The fellowship period may be reduced if the successful applicant has held previous employment as research fellow or similar.
The teaching language will normally be Norwegian. However, applicants with documented excellent knowledge of English are also eligible, regardless of knowledge of Norwegian.
Starting salary on grade 48 (code 1017/pay framework 20.8) in the Civil Service pay grade table scale; currently NOK 391,300 gross p.a.; following ordinary meriting regulations.
