Postdoctoral Research Fellow within Electromagnetic Geophysics (Geosteering for IOR)
There is a vacancy for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Department of Earth Science, within electromagnetic geophysics. The position is for a period of 2 years and is connected to the project «Geosteering for Improved Oil Recovery”, funded by the Petromaks2 program of the Norwegian Research Council. It is desirable that the candidate should be able to start work as soon as possible.
About the project/work tasks:
The main goal of this interdisciplinary project is to develop fast integral equation methods for modelling and inversion of controlled-source electromagnetic (CSEM) data using ideas that were originally developed within seismic geophysics.
A further aim is to integrate the developed methods for modelling and inversion of CSEM data into an interdisciplinary Geosteering workflow for Improved Oil Recovery.
Qualifications and personal qualities:
Applicants must hold a PhD degree or equivalent in mathematically oriented geophysics, applied mathematics or theoretical/computational physics, or must have submitted his/her doctoral thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded by 31 December 2017.
A relevant background within electromagnetic geophysics, quantitative (statistical) integration of different data types and/or geosteering for IOR will be an advantage. However, the lack of such experience may to some extent be compensated by exceptionally strong skills within general mathematical modelling and inversion. Strong programming skills is an absolute requirement.
A high degree of scientific and personal flexibility is required for this interdisciplinary project.
Proficiency in both written and oral English.
We are searching for a highly qualified candidate with the ability to work both independently and in collaboration with others. The successful candidate will get the opportunity to work on the project in collaboration with Professor Morten Jakobsen at the Department of Earth Science, Research Director Erlend Vefring, and Researcher Sergey Alaev at IRIS in Bergen.
About the position of postdoctoral research fellow
The postdoctoral fellow position is a fixed-term appointment with the primary objective of qualifying the appointee for work in top academic positions. The fixed-term period for this position is two years. If the successful candidate does not have teaching experience, the university might consider extending the employment period to two years and (for instance) three months. The department will fund any extra time. Teaching and other compulsory work for the department will then be added to the duties of this position. Individuals may not be hired for more than one fixed-term period as a postdoctoral research fellow at the same institution.
Upon appointment, the postdoctoral fellow should work out a project proposal for the qualifying work in collaboration with the project leader, including a progress plan.
It is a requirement that the successful candidate completes the project in the course of the employment period.
