Postdoc position or research fellow (PhD) in low-temperature thermochronology and tectonics, 3 yearsAt the Department of Earth Science, University of Bergen, a 3 years Postdoc or PhD position in low-temperature thermochronology is available. The position is funded by StatoilHydro as part of a project entitled "Earth System Modeling: Structural inheritance and exhumation along passive continental margins". In this project we will study exhumation histories of orogen-margin systems using fission-track and U-Th/He analysis. A prerequisite for this position is a good background in thermochronological techniques (fission-track and/or He-dating), obtained during a master or PhD project. Rupturing of continental lithosphere and passive continental margin formation is commonly related to inherited structures and often follows lithosphere anisotropies of relatively young orogens. Along the North Sea and the Norwegian margin, structural inheritance influences basin and rift margin architecture. Specifically, major oblique structures with respect to the general trend of the reactivated orogen can lead to significant segmentation of the evolving basin. In Norway, the Hardangerfjord, Nordfjord and Møre-Trondelag lineaments are examples of reactivated structures that originally were coined during the Caledonian orogeny. Along the East African margin the Lurio lineament represents structural inheritance of the East African-Antarctic Orogen; it has significantly influenced East Africa's margin architecture. Analogies with the Brazilian margin will be developed. As a representative example, the Hardangerfjord lineament will be studied in detail onshore and offshore from its late Caledonian origin to its recent seismic activity. Structural studies together with a broad range of thermochronological dating methods (fission-track and U-Th/He analysis) will be used to unravel the long lasting deformation and geomorphic history. The project is integrated into a larger, industry funded initiative in Earth System Modeling. If no applicants are qualified for the postdoctoral position, candidates for the PhD position will be evaluated. Re. Postdoctoral Fellow: The postdoctoral position is a temporary appointment, the chief objective being to qualify the selected candidate for work in senior positions in their disciplines. The term of employment for this position is three (3) years. Interested candidates may contact Prof. Joachim Jacobs (Joachim.Jacobs@geo.uib.no) for further information. The closing date for this application is: 24. June 2009 Further informations and procedure of application: https://secure.jobbnorge.no/visstilling2.aspx?stillid=58817 |
