Institute of Geology

Ph.D. student position in Tectonics/Thermochronology, with focus on the exhumation of the axial core of the Eastern Alps

We seek a PhD student to work within a tectonics project based at the Freie University of Berlin (Germany). Funding is provided by the DFG (German Science foundation) for two years and renewable for a third year. It includes a monthly salary in addition to covering the costs of travel and expenses of field work, conferences and meetings. We aim to start this PhD project at a mutually agreeable date in June to early July 2008.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT

We will investigate the mechanisms leading to the localization of exhumation within the core of the Alpine collisional orogen. In particular, we will examine the relationship between orogen-parallel extension and orogen-normal contraction during exhumation, by assessing the Mid-Miocene paleostress fields and the Mid-Miocene cooling patterns in the axial core of the Eastern Alps. The investigation will be based on the analysis of brittle deformation in the field and of fission tracks in zircons and apatites. The PhD candidate will cooperate with other ongoing projects on the tectonics/geochronology of the Eastern Alps. In addition, we cooperate with the University of Innsbruck (Austria), where the PhD candidate will perform the fission track analyses.

QUALIFICATIONS

The PhD candidate is required to have a Masters in Geology, to be self-motivated, and possess good written and oral communication skills. A strong background in structural geology and/or thermochronology is desired, but not a necessary condition for application.

CONTACT

Candidates should contact Dr. Claudio Rosenberg at the Institute of Geology, Free University of Berlin
(cla@zedat.fu-berlin.de) attaching a CV detailing experience and qualifications and the name and address of a reference person.
Deadline for application: 31.05.2008.
