The Institute of Geological Sciences, Universität Bern & the Natural History Museum Bern invite applications for a:


PhD Studentship in Meteorite Sciences/Geology


In the framework of the project "Meteorite accumulations of Arabia" (a collaboration between the Natural History Museums Bern and Geneva, the Institute of Geological Sciences and Physics, University of Bern, and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Sultanate of Oman) there is a funded PhD position available. The qualified applicant will conduct a compilation and analysis of meteorite data from the Arabian peninsula acquired since 2001 using geographical information system applications (GIS). This will include classification and analysis of meteorites and soils, with special emphasis on XRF surface analysis, analysis for salt concentration in electrodynamically disaggregated meteorites, and compilation/extraction of statistic data. The candidate will participate in meteorite search campaigns on the Arabian Peninsula.

To qualify, the candidate must have a degree (diploma/master) in earth sciences. Knowledge of GIS-systems is an advantage. Required is a good knowledge in mineralogical investigation methods (optical microscopy, electron-beam microanalysis, X-ray fluorescence), experience in the handling of geochemical data, and a solid knowledge of English.

The position is open immediately and limited to a duration of 3 years. Payment is according to the rules of the Swiss National Science Foundation.
