A vacancy has arisen for a graduate or early-career Geologist with good broad geological knowledge and experience in applied environmental and engineering geology, based at our expanding office in Cardiff. The appointment is for a three year fixed term, with the possibility of extension or conversion to an open-ended contract. The BGS office in Cardiff undertakes to deliver the NERC National Capability in Geosciences in Wales. As well as developing baseline geological information (maps and models) we are developing research in strategic topics including energy, land use planning, geohazards, regeneration and environmental management. As a highly motivated scientist, you will play a pro-active role in the development and delivery of the BGS science program in Wales. You will work within a team to deliver a programme of national good geoscience, focused mostly in the area of regeneration and sustainable development related to key city-regions in Wales. Ideally, you will have experience of working on Engineering or Applied Environmental Geology projects in an urban setting, and you will be able to demonstrate how applied geological science plays a role in the development of solutions to environmental and development problems. You will be able to communicate your ideas effectively in a variety of ways to scientists, decision makers and funding bodies. You must have a 2:1 degree (or better) in Geology or closely related geoscience subject. An MSc in Applied Environmental or Engineering Geology is desirable. You must possess excellent oral and written communication skills. The post involves team working, therefore you should be able to demonstrate that you can work effectively with others, possibly in a leadership role when necessary, and that you can work independently when required. Although the post will be based in Cardiff, you should expect significant periods of time working away, sometimes overseas, either undertaking fieldwork or working at other BGS sites.
