GEOLOGISTS x2 posts

Keyworth and Edinburgh, UK

The British Geological Survey is one of the world's leading geological research institutes, focusing on public-good science for government and society, and geoscientific research to understand earth and environmental processes. We are seeking to recruit two geologists, one to be based at Keyworth, near Nottingham, and one in Edinburgh.

You will work in a vibrant research environment with opportunities to develop and express your research skills both as an individual and as a member of high performing and cross-disciplinary science teams. You will be equally comfortable developing and delivering your own research initiatives and team-based work. You will be required to undertake geological syntheses and field work involving primary observation and interpretation. You will be involved in the interpretation and modelling of the subsurface environment, landscape and anthropogenic effects, with a particular focus on processes. You will develop skills and knowledge through pure and applied research, specialist and general training courses, and through publishing and communicating your science and the work of BGS.

You have a first- or upper second-class degree in Geology, or earth science. You will have a PhD in geology that demonstrates an ability to work on the regional scale, able to integrate a wide range of data, and be able to undertake geological fieldwork independently and in teams. You will have some understanding of Quaternary geology, but you are not expected to be a specialist. The posts will be based in the UK, but will involve fieldwork away from our centres, in the UK and overseas. You must be able to travel and be able to work in remote, sometimes challenging environments. A driving license valid in the UK is essential.

Depending on qualifications and experience, starting salary will be £26,450 per annum to £29,710 per annum (pay award pending). Working hours will be 37 per week excluding lunch breaks. A generous benefits package is also offered, including a company pension scheme, childcare salary sacrifice scheme, 30 days annual leave plus 10.5 days public and privilege holidays.
