The British Geological Survey (BGS) is a world leading, forward thinking geological science institute with a focus on both public good science and geoscientific research to understand earth and environmental processes. The UK GeoEnergy Observatories (UKGEOS) project is NERC's response to the UK Government's announcement in the 2014 Autumn Statement that it will allocate 31m to create world-class, subsurface energy research test centres, to be operated by the BGS. The centres will allow independent, rigorous and replicable observations of subsurface processes and provide objective scientific evidence on the efficiency, environmental impact and sustainability of novel subsurface energy technologies, for the benefit of society and the economy. The Cheshire Energy Research Field Site is planned to be located in the Thornton area (Cheshire) and focus on shale gas and Carbon Capture and Storage, and the second in Scotland will focus on geothermal energy.

We are now seeking a Petrophysicist/Geophysicist to be based at our headquarters in Keyworth, Nottingham to contribute to the understanding of the geological structure and properties of rocks in the subsurface at and around the first UKGEOS centre in Cheshire. You will have broad geoscience knowledge and be able to integrate, describe and interpret diverse subsurface datasets (including downhole geophysics, seismic reflection data, data derived from borehole core materials), including the generation of structural and geological property models. Liaison with the research community who will use interpretative models and the effective communication of relevant scientific outcomes will be an important part of this role. A minimum of one year's relevant post-graduate research, training or petroleum industry experience is essential, along with knowledge of state-of-the-art petrophysical and subsurface geo-modelling software packages. A background in exploration geophysics would also be considered. The role may include travel off site and periods of out-of-office fieldwork.

Starting salary will be between 22,224 per annum to 30,600 per annum, depending on qualifications and experience. A salary above 28,200 per annum will be considered for candidates who have a PhD or Master's degree in a geophysics-related discipline. Working hours will be 37 per week excluding lunch breaks.
