The British Geological Survey (BGS) is one of the world's leading and forward thinking geological science institutes with a focus on both public good science for government and geoscientific research to understand earth and environmental processes. A vacancy has arisen for a highly motivated and enthusiastic Statistics Lead at our headquarters in Keyworth, Nottingham.

You will lead and develop BGS's statistical capability. You will be expected to have a strong track record of publications in statistical methodology and applications with an established reputation in fields related to the applications of statistics to the geosciences. You will sit within the BGS GeoAnalytics and Modelling Science Directorate where you will be expected to lead in the development of research proposals and support product and service development.

The work will be mostly UK based but there may also be opportunities to work overseas for short periods of time. You will work as part of a directorate's Data Analytics team and provide the leadership and expertise required to develop, apply and advise on the use of statistical methods, and other mathematical and analysis techniques to a range of geoscience problems. You will be expected to develop statistics more generally within the whole organisation and in collaboration with other academic and industrial partners.

As part of the community of statisticians in BGS you will be expected to share your knowledge and input to progress and develop new research ideas and projects. You will also be required to lead on proposal writing for UKRI calls and the development of commissioned research with industry. You must therefore have an outstanding knowledge of statistical methods in the environmental sciences such as: sample survey planning, linear mixed modelling including geostatistical methods, time series modelling, generalised linear models, multivariate methods, statistical inference, experimental design, and extreme value theory and modelling in a Bayesian computational framework.

You should have a PhD in applied statistics or mathematics with environmental science experience. You should have excellent communication skills, both oral and written. The post will involve multidisciplinary team working, therefore you must be able to work effectively with scientists in different disciplines.
