Geological Modelling Statistician

£28,200 - £38,254 (depending on qualifications and experience)

The British Geological Survey is one of the world's leading and forward thinking geological science institutes with a focus on both public good science for government and geoscientific research to understand earth and environmental processes. A vacancy has arisen for a highly motivated and enthusiastic Geological Modeller based at our headquarters in Keyworth, Nottingham. You will provide expertise in the development of geological models, including the development and parameterisation of geostatistical geocelluar models, using a variety of datasets. A key element of the role will involve the assessment and quantification of uncertainty in geological models. You will have extensive experience using geological modelling software and in the application of statistical methods in geological modelling. You will have a sound understanding of the statistical theory that underpins geological models. You will work effectively with teams of geoscientists and geological modellers, with potential to contribute to developments in the BGS National Geological Model and UK Geoenergy Observatories programmes.

You will be able to:
  • interact with users of models
  • explain key aspects of geological modelling to non-specialists
  • advise users on how models should be interpreted.
The work will be largely UK based, but there may be opportunities to work on short duration overseas projects.

You should have a postgraduate qualification with a substantial statistical component MSc in applied statistics together with some environmental science experience.

You should have excellent communication skills, both oral and written. The post will involve multidisciplinary team working, therefore you must be able to work effectively with scientists in different disciplines.

This is a 3 year fixed term appointment. Starting salary will be between £28,200 per annum to £38,254 per annum depending on qualifications and experience. Working hours will be 37 per week excluding lunch breaks.
