NERC BGS is a partner organisation within UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). UKRI is a new entity that brings together nine partners to create an independent organisation with a strong voice for research and innovation, and a vision to ensure the UK maintains its world-leading position in research and innovation.
The British Geological Survey (BGS) is an applied geoscience research centre that is housed in UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and affiliated to the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). It is a world leading geological survey that provides a core science mission to inform government of science related to the subsurface and its interfaces and also undertakes applied research for solutions to earth and environmental processes, both in the UK and globally. It is funded directly by UKRI as well as through research grants and via private sector contracts.
BGS is seeking to appoint a highly motivated Geologist to join the Engineering Geology and Infrastructure team at our headquarters in Keyworth in Nottingham.
About the role
With a passion for geology, your work will include:
You will have an undergraduate degree in Geology (or related subject) and either a related Master's degree or substantial industry experience. You should also be able to demonstrate a broad understanding of UK geology and have the geological knowledge and flexibility to be able to work within a range of spatial scales and types of geological terrain.
You should be able to demonstrate an ability for performing field-based work, be capable of synthesising your observations and data into coherent, 3-dimensional interpretations of the rock mass and its superficial cover.
You will be able to undertake independent and team-based studies, develop innovative solutions to geological challenges and link these to applications and impacts for BGS clients and wider stakeholders.
As a confident communicator and team worker, you will be able to contribute positively to areas of your work, interacting with non-specialists, scientists and experts in other disciplines. You will also be a confident writer and be able to contribute effectively to written outputs (e.g. technical reports and papers). The post is based in Nottingham, UK, but at times involve fieldwork in the UK away from our centres, and sometimes overseas. You must be able to travel and be able to work in remote, sometimes challenging environments. A driving license valid for use in the UK is essential.
