Pay Band D salary range is £31,931 to £34,709 per annum (depending on qualifications/experience and a specialist allowance may be payable for an exceptional candidate)
Full-time - 37 hours a week (a range of flexible working options may be available including hybrid working, which BGS is currently trialling)
The British Geological Survey (BGS) is an applied geoscience research centre that is part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and is affiliated to the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). It is a world leading geological survey whose core mission is to inform government of science related to the subsurface and to undertake applied research to solve earth and environmental issues, both in the UK and globally. It is funded directly by UKRI, as well as through research grants and private sector contracts.
BGS has an annual budget of approximately £60 million and employs 650 people. It has two main sites: a head office in Keyworth near Nottingham, and the Lyell Centre, which is a joint collaboration with Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh. BGS works with more than 150 private sector organisations, has close links with 40 universities, and sponsors approximately 100 PhD students each year.

About the role
We have an exciting opportunity for an innovative, flexible, and motivated User Interface Geoscience Software Developer with proven experience and a passion for coding to join our Application Development team within the BGS Digital group.
We would like you to play a leading role in helping us build and maintain software solutions that acquire, manage, and deliver Geoscience data & information to a variety of stakeholders. The successful candidate will be helping BGS solve real world environmental problems through the application of software engineering and science.
You'll gain exposure to a variety of modern technologies, development environments and information architectures, all within an agile culture that promotes learning & development and the following of industry best-practice from inception to delivery. We adopt a supportive, team-orientated approach to software development and encourage code reviews and collaborative mob programming sessions.
The role involves working on a range of software development and maintenance activities, working on multiple projects with differently skilled teams, depending on project requirements.
Several of our software development projects involve international collaboration (primarily Europe, Africa e.g. Nigeria, Asia and/or Middle East. There will be opportunities for the successful applicant to travel overseas, potentially working in-country for periods of up to two-three weeks at a time.

- Proven competency in front-end software development likely to have been gained through commercial experience since your Degree (or equivalent experience).
- Has a passion for coding and recognises the value of code quality and best practices within software engineering especially relating to security.
- Familiarity with modern web frameworks such as Angular, React or Vue.
- An eye for effective UX and UI.
- Experience developing design mock-ups into flexible and reusable code.
- An understanding of object-oriented design.
- Version control using Git.
- Familiarity with and adherence to web standards.
- Continuous Integration and Delivery.
- Participation in Agile project teams.
- Using OpenAPI specification (Swagger) or RESTful API.
- An enthusiastic learner, able to pick up new skills quickly.
- Enthusiasm for Geology and the geosciences.
- Good communication skills and the ability to explain complex problems simply.
- Ability to work independently and within multi-disciplinary teams.
To meet the expectations of the advertised grade (Band D) you will be able to lead technical decision making and demonstrate the enthusiasm and ability needed to influence the advancement of BGS Application Development technical capabilities and working practices.
