Metallic Minerals GeologistThe British Geological Survey, (BGS) part of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), is the UK's premier geoscience strategic mapping and research organisation. A vacancy has arisen for a Metallic Minerals Geologist based at Keyworth, Nottingham. You will work chiefly in the Minerals for Development team contributing mineral-related information, services and advice to a range of BGS projects and customers in the UK and overseas. A key role will be the conduct of research on the genesis of metallic mineral deposits. This will involve development of new research ideas, establishment of partnerships with other parts of BGS and UK academia, and the identification of new opportunities/additional sources of funding in this sector. You will also contribute to BGS activities related to minerals intelligence gathering and analysis of the global, European and UK minerals industries, with emphasis on topical issues such as security of supply and sustainable minerals development. You will produce peer-reviewed and other outputs from these activities for a wide range of stakeholders in the UK and overseas. You will have a first degree in Geosciences together with a Master level qualification in a relevant area of economic geology, and have an understanding of the genesis of mineral deposits and how to explore for them. In addition you should have knowledge of modern research techniques (geological, geochemical, isotopic, mineralogical and geophysical) used in metallogenic studies. The role requires you to develop links with outside stakeholders and, therefore, you must have good presentational and written skills. In addition, you must have a flexible approach to work, strong self-motivation, and have the ability to generate new ideas for metallogenic research. You must be willing to undertake field studies in the UK and overseas. Starting salary will be between £24,380 per annum to £36,390 per annum depending on qualifications and experience. Working hours will be 37 per week excluding lunch breaks.
