Purpose and Main Duties

We seek to employ a Lecturer in Planetary Surfaces with an overall research focus related to understanding the evolution of the planets, moons and solar system objects, including the Earth, to complement existing strengths within the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Birkbeck and the Institute of Earth and Planetary Sciences (IEPS) which is joint with the UCL Department of Earth Sciences. Areas of specialization might include, but are not limited to, surface processes using remote sensing and field/laboratory studies, planetary exploration missions, and earth/planet/asteroid/comet evolution, with research skills in observation, measurement and modeling. IEPS provides access to the Centre for Planetary Sciences, a NASA Regional Planetary Imaging Facility, and a wide range of geochemical and geophysical science laboratories.

The successful candidate will provide evidence for experience at the highest levels in research, and strong commitments to developing high quality teaching and administration. As a member of IEPS, the successful candidate will engage with a wider community of existing geology, geophysics and planetary science staff who have expertise in, amongst other topics, planetary exploration, astrobiology, geochemistry, geomorphology, studies of the deep earth and planetary interiors, seismology and natural hazards.

Candidate Requirements

The successful candidate must have a PhD and provide evidence of the highest levels of research activity. They will also be expected to teach planetary modules to BSc level geology and planetary science students, in topics such as “Geology of the Solar System”, and “Remote Sensing of Planetary Surfaces”, that make full use of their research experience. They will be expected to supervise BSc, MSc, MPhil and PhD students. Teaching will involve evening classes in central London plus distance learning duties, and participation in field classes. The successful candidate will be expected to place strong emphasis on the pastoral care and intellectual development of students. Administrative activities will be expected as a contribution to departmental and outside activities concomitant with grade.

Further Information

Salary: Grade 8 of the College's London Pay Scale which is £42,913 rising to £50,514 pro rata per annum.

This post is full time, 35 hours per week (1.0 FTE) and Open Ended. The salary quoted above is on the College's London Pay Scale and includes a consolidated Weighting/Allowance which applies only to staff whose normal contractual place of work is in the Greater London area. The initial salary will be dependent on the skills, qualifications and experience of the successful applicant. The appointment is subject to a probationary period of 3 years.
