Lecturer in Palaeoclimatology



We are seeking to appoint a Lecturer to contribute to the teaching and research programmes of the Department of Earth Sciences, which is part of the Birkbeck/UCL joint Research School in Earth Sciences located within the UCL campus in the Bloomsbury area of central London.

The Research School which is one of the largest in the UK with over 30 academic staff was ranked 3rd in Earth Sciences in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise, reflecting the standing and success of the academic staff. Its research activities cover the full range of Earth and Planetary sciences and the successful candidate is expected to contribute to the continuing success of the research school.

The appointee will be expected play and active role in palaeoclimate research and interact with existing research groups including those in: palaeoclimate, palaeobiology, palaeoenvironments, earth systems science and landscape evolution. We would particularly welcome applicants who have interests in one of the following research topics:

  1. Deep-time climate modeling and climate interactions with large scale tectonic processes, mountain building and regional climate change, such as the evolution of the Asian Monsoon, Himalayas and Tibet Plateau.
  2. Quaternary and Holocene climate change in Africa and its impact on lakes, deserts and the biosphere.
  3. Climate proxy data from environmentally sensitive stable isotopes and organic geochemistry, interactions of oceans, climate and biotic evolution.

Applicants should have a PhD, or equivalent, in Earth Sciences or a relevant related area, in addition to proven teaching skills. Postdoctoral research experience and a publication record would be advantageous.

Salary will be £33,501 rising to £38,376 per annum on Lecturer Grade A salary scales. The initial salary award will be dependent on skills and experience.
