(Rock Mechanics)
Vacancy No: A094-09J
Closing Date: 30 June 2009
The Department of Geological Sciences invites applications for the
continuing (tenured) position of Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/Associate
Professor in Engineering Geology (Rock Mechanics).
Engineering Geology is a core component of the programmes offered by the
Department of Geological Sciences at University of Canterbury, New
Zealand. In particular, the MSc (Engineering Geology) programme has for
some decades been at the forefront in providing skilled graduates for
the industry in Australasia, and student demand is increasing. We seek
capability to support this demand and to extend the range of expertise
available. This position therefore requires a highly-qualified research
scientist with industry-related experience in rock mechanics and its
application to engineering geology to develop and carry out research,
develop and deliver course material and supervise postgraduate research.
Experience in hydrogeology would also be advantageous.
Applicants for this position will be expected to teach at undergraduate
and postgraduate levels, supervise postgraduate research students in the
MSc and PhD (Engineering Geology) programmes, and contribute to
undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in geology and/or hazard and
disaster management. Applicants will be expected to have an excellent
research and publication track record and lead their own research
programmes. They should have the ability to generate external funding.
Preference may be given to applicants with experience in the application
of computational methods to rock mechanics, slope stability and other
aspects of engineering geology.
Applicants must have a PhD, and postdoctoral research and/or industrial
experience in rock mechanics and its application to engineering geology,
with an excellent research track record appropriate to the level of
application. Applicants at the Associate Professor level will be
required to have demonstrated significant academic leadership and have
an international reputation in the field of Rock Mechanics. The
Department of Geological Sciences has a high national and international
profile and has excellent teaching and research facilities.
