Griffith Postdoctoral Position: Data integration

  • To be appointed to the Coastal & Marine Resources Centre (CMRC), University College Cork
  • Contract duration: three years
  • Salary starts @ approximately 55k euros per annum (based on at least three years post doctoral (or equivalent) level experience).

Background to host organization and the Griffith Research Awards

The CMRC is a multidisciplinary research group in University College Cork (http://www.ucc.ie), whose primary objective is to make a significant contribution to the scientific understanding and management of coastal and marine environments (http://cmrc.ucc.ie). The CMRC team have an established track record in the development and application of solutions for environmental decision making based on geomatics technology.

National research capacity is being stimulated in the field of geosciences by a €10 million national investment as part of the Griffith Geoscience Research Awards, which will run over the next seven years. As part of this process, which is facilitated nationally by the Geological Survey of Ireland (GSI), new postdoctoral positions will be implemented to expand research in the geomatics for geosciences field.

Collaboration with the Geological Survey of Ireland (GSI) http://www.gsi.ie

This geomatics for geosciences initiative will involve a high level of collaboration between the CMRC and the GSI. The candidates will be encouraged to spend time in the GSI offices, Dublin, to become fully familiar with data management and the geosciences domain, and to develop relationships with relevant contacts. The amount of time spent in the GSI will be flexible and will depend on individual researcher and project needs.

The overall research will use both terrestrial and marine geological datasets (including Irish National Seabed Survey data), and will focus on data integration and building a common data warehouse (including metadata); web data delivery and interoperability; and 4D visualisation.

Objectives of the Project

  1. To facilitate open access to GSI data on a web enabled basis
  2. To achieve innovations in geoscience data management and delivery
  3. To build capacity in within and between the GSI and CMRC
  4. To engage the Irish geoscience community by providing examples of the benefits of data sharing

Qualifications

The ideal candidate for the data integration post is expected to have post-doctoral (or equivalent) level experience and to have either:

  • A higher degree (NFQ-9 or above ) in information technology or equivalent, and a good appreciation of geology or a closely related discipline.
  • A higher degree (NFQ-9 or above1) in geology or a closely related discipline, along with appropriate qualifications/experience in information technology.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Excellent RDBMS database modelling and design skills
  • Exposure to RDBMS databases (e.g. Oracle 9i/10g)
  • Experience in developing data extract, transform and load (ETL) processes
  • Programming experience (e.g. Java)
  • Excellent team working and oral and written communication skills

Other desirable qualifications for the successful candidate include:

  • Experience in the field of geological data modelling (e.g. Arc Geology, GeoSciML, etc.)
  • Familiarity with GIS (e.g. ESRI)
  • Knowledge of metadata standards (e.g. ISO 19115/19139)
  • Demonstration of leadership or project management skills
  • An interest in geology and geological data management
