The Institute of Geology and Mineralogy, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Cologne, Germany, invites applications for a position as

Postdoctoral Scientist / Lab manager in AMS 14C
sample preparation (tenure track)



The position will be based in the Organic Geochemistry, Radiocarbon group at the Institute of Geology and Mineralogy. The group is integrated in the new, interdisciplinary CologneAMS center performing cosmogenic nuclide dating for internal and external users. Within CologneAMS the Radiocarbon group is responsible for organizing and performing sample preparation for AMS 14C analysis.

Tasks:

  • Organization of the sample preparation together with 2-3 technicians and student helpers
  • Improvement of existing and development of new analytical techniques in AMS 14C analysis (e.g. preparation/graphitization of small samples, compound-specific 14C analysis with GC and HPLC, preparation and analysis of gas samples)
  • Contribution to customer service, preparation of dating reports and administrative tasks
  • Performance of own research and contribution to projects at the Institute of Geology and Mineralogy (organic geochemistry, quaternary geology, palaeoclimatology, soil science) and at the Institute of Prehistory/Archeology (human evolution, geoarchaeology)
  • Obtaining research grants
  • Teaching (6 hours per week each semester) of B.Sc and M.Sc level courses in Geoscience and Geoarchaeology and training of students, researchers and external users of the lab

Qualifications:

  • PhD in geosciences, environmental sciences, chemistry or related subjects
  • Proven hands-on experience with (radio-)carbon isotope analysis, vacuum systems including sample preparation and data evaluation, and preferably reporting of samples and data
  • Desirable analytical skills: experience in organic geochemical analysis (gas and liquid chromatography) and compound-specific stable isotope or 14C analysis
  • Willingness to work team-oriented and good communication skills
  • Good knowledge of English and willingness to learn German

Conditions: The initial appointment will be for 4 years (German Public Service Sector salary group TV-L E13). After positive evaluation in the final year, the candidate is tenured on a permanent position (German Civil Service position 'Akademischer Rat/Oberrat', salary group: BBesO A13/A14).
