The Institute of Geography at the University of Cologne invites applications for a po-sition as: Research Associate for the Geographical Laboratories (E13 TV-L)The position is located at the Institute of Geography within the Physical Geography branch. The successful candidate will assist in the scientific management of a well-equipped and modern physical geography lab, which comprises among others of an ICP-MS with HPLC coupling, a graphic furnace AAS, a laser particle sizer. We expect contributions and active support of current research projects, participation in the development and application of new research initiatives, management of lab operations (including in particular compliance with safety regulation), and guidance for student research projects pertaining to geophysical and geochemical lab analyses. Teaching requirements include a course in lab methods of 4 hours per week per semester. We are particularly looking for candidates with a M.Sc. degree (or equivalent) in Ge-ography / Geosciences or related fields and a Ph.D. with a physical-geographical, ecological, geochemical or pedagogical focus, proficiency and several years of experience in the application of modern geo-scientific laboratory and field methods, experience in teaching and the willingness to engage in new areas of research. We also welcome the willingness to contribute to academic administration. The position will initially be a two-year appointment with the high probability for ten-ure and the potential for promotion to head of the Geographical laboratories. The salary (E 13 TV-L) as well as fringe benefits is in accordance with the pay schedule of North-Rhine Westphalia. First consideration will be given to applications received by 18 November 2013.
