Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen

Ph.D. position - Carbon cycle and environmental perturbations associated with the end Triassic - Jurassic mass extinction interval: high resolution analyses in the Danish and Paris Basins

Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management (DGN), Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering a fully funded PhD scholarship commencing October 30th or soon thereafter. The application deadline is October 10th 2013

Project description

We seek a highly motivated candidate to carry out high-resolution chemo- and cyclostratigraphic analysis with the goal of deciphering local - global changes of environmental redox and carbon cycle perturbations through the end Triassic (Rhaetian) early Jurassic (Pliensbachian), and assessing the pacing of the ecosystem pertubation. The candidate will achieve the goal through the study of an expanded core from the Danish Basin and one in the Paris Basin (France) using organic carbon isotopes, trace elements (XRF, ICP-MS), and organic matter analysis (Rock-eval, biomarker analysis and compound-specific isotopes) as well as timeseries analysis. The PhD student is expected to spend more than half a year abroad to work on biomarker analysis in paleo-environmental reconstructions. The ideal candidate has worked with the methods to be used or related geochemical and geological methods.

The project will be carried out within the framework of a large Geocenter Denmark project "The Triassic-Jurassic boundary: Impact of a Large Igneous Province on the geobiosphere" involving 12 in house researchers and 9 international collaborators. The ultimate goal of the project is to 1) decipher local, regional and global changes across the Triassic- Jurassic boundary interval, 2) resolve the causality and effects of major CO2 and sulfur emissions from the CAMP volcanism on the marine and terrestrial biota, 3) assess the geographical extent and possible variations in environmental impact depending on sites of deposition, 4) assess the pacing, and duration of the ecosystem extinctions and recoveries.
