Faculty of Science,
Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management
Associate Professor of Structural Geology
in Sedimentary Basins
The research area involves structural analysis of sedimentary succession and basins, and modeling toward a quantitative understanding the tectonics that influenced the sedimentation and/or the post depositional evolution of the successions/basins. The research ties with outcrop and borehole stratigraphy-sedimentology, outcrop and seismic sequence stratigraphy, basin analysis, and petroleum geology.
The ideal applicant has experience in structural analysis of seismic data sets, drill core and outcrops of sedimentary successions as well as regional mapping. Furthermore, the candidate carries out quantitative basin analysis, and has an interest in forward modeling of tectonics and basin development at basin scales using numerical methods.
The successful candidate must be able to collaborate with other staff in the department, including geophysical analysis of sedimentary basins, basin-scale geodynamics, and stratigraphic-sedimentological basin analysis. A record of research publication and collaboration is essential.
The candidate should be qualified to teach structural geology and geological mapping at undergraduate levels. The successful candidate will also develop graduate level teaching in advanced structural geology of sedimentary basins including numerical methods.
The ideal candidate possesses the dynamics, expertise and qualifications to contribute to the academic development of the general geology program at all levels, including field courses.
We expect the position will interface with existing strengths in basin analysis, stratigraphy-sedimentary facies analysis and petroleum geology within the Basins Studies Group. Fundamental research directly related to the North Sea (and global) oil and gas industry is a possibility. The candidate should be able to attract external funds, including industry funding.
Applicants are required to have university level teaching experience, documented teaching competencies and must be able to explain and reflect upon own teaching practice and portfolio. Formal pedagogical training or supervision equivalent to the University of Copenhagen teacher training programme for assistant professors is required in order to obtain a permanent position.
Duties include the applicant's own research, development of the field, assessment tasks, grant applications, and research management such as supervision and training of research fellows and other staff. The successful applicant must also teach, supervise, prepare and participate in examinations, and fulfill other tasks requested by the Department.
Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented, original scientific production at an international level, including contributions to developments in their field, as well as their documented teaching qualifications.
The department has well-equipped petroleum systems facilities including 15 workstations with Petrel licences, seismic and well log coverage of a large part of the North Sea through collaboration with Mærsk Oil; all cores from the Danish North Sea through collaboration with Geological Survey and Mærsk. Further information on the Department is linked at http://www.science.ku.dk/english/about-the-faculty/departments/. Inquiries about the position can be made to associate professor Lars Nielsen, Vice-Head of the department, +45 3532 2454, ln@geo.ku.dk.
The position is open from 1 February 2014 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The University wishes our staff to reflect the diversity of society and thus welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background.
