The Department of Geophysics at Colorado School of Mines is seeking to fill a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor Position in the specialty area of petroleum geophysics. We anticipate filling this position for the spring semester of 2019 or earlier. The successful candidate will work as part of the Reservoir Characterization Project (RCP), and work collaboratively with other research groups in the department. RCP is a 30-year-old, well-established industry consortium sponsored by oil and gas operators and service companies, and is dedicated to the study of integrated reservoir characterization (see rcp.mines.edu). Mines seeks a qualified individual who will contribute to the excellence of our academic community through their research, teaching, service, dedication to diversity in the geosciences, and collaboration with multiple researchers in the department and across the Mines campus.
The new faculty will be expected to maintain a vigorous research program that includes (a) building strong collaborative relationships with industry, academic, research, and/or government institutions; (b) generating research funding; (c) supervising graduate students; and (d) maintaining a strong record of scholarly publishing. The successful candidate will teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and participate actively in the international geophysics community.
We are seeking to enhance our capabilities in several areas of research related to petroleum geophysics. One research focus is advances in land reflection seismic (surface and borehole), including new acquisition, processing, and imaging methods. Another area is quantitative understanding of fiber optic sensing from wells in unconventional resources during hydraulic fracturing and later production. A third area of research is machine learning and data analytics applied to reflection seismic and borehole data to invert for reservoir properties. Further ability to collaborate with the Petroleum Engineering and Geology departments is seen as valuable.
Individuals interested in joining the Mines faculty must possess a doctoral degree in geophysics or a related field. They must also possess superb interpersonal and communication skills, a collaborative style of research and teaching, and must have experience in collaboration with industry. Individuals interested in joining our faculty must have research interests that hold potential for multidisciplinary collaboration, demonstrate the potential to perform as an effective instructor, develop online courses, and an ability to mentor graduate students.
Mines is a unique institution of applied science and engineering with a global reputation for excellence in programs such as Geophysics, focusing on the earth, energy, and the environment. The Geophysics Department has 10 tenured/tenure-track faculty, approximately 100 undergraduate students, and over 70 graduate students.
