Igneous Petrology and Geochemistry, Research
Associate/ Research Fellow

Position Number: 3537124
Tenure: 3 years fixed-term, full-time
Salary Range: $85,961 - $92,224 (ALA) , $97,076 - $115,277 (ALB)
Location: Bentley

We believe that investing in dedicated people and their ideas will make tomorrow better. With this in mind, the department of Applied Geology is offering a Research Associate/Research Fellow position across two disciplinary areas – igneous petrology and geochemistry.

As a Research Associate/Research Fellow your role will contribute to the Australian Research Council (ARC) Laureate Fellowship research program on Earth evolution and dynamics under the direction of Professor Zheng-Xiang Li. The role of this position is to lead the pre-Cretaceous oceanic Large Igneous Province (LIP) research stream within the program. The continental LIP record has provided a wealth of information regarding mantle and continental dynamics, however the LIP record contained on the continents forms less than one half of the LIP record as the ocean crust dominates Earth’s lithosphere. Elucidating the oceanic LIP record will provide additional and important constraints on mantle and lithosphere dynamics through geologic time.

This unique opportunity will allow you to utilise your strong knowledge of igneous petrology and geochemistry research skills and make significant contributions to the Laureate program. You will be working within a multidisciplinary team of energetic researchers and research students, including field-based orogenic and basin studies, paleomagnetism and global reconstruction, database construction and data mining, and 4D geodynamic modeling.

A doctoral qualification combined with high level research experience in igneous petrology and geochemistry research is essential. Experience in LIP and/or ophiolite research will be advantageous. This research stream will be supported by 1-2 PhD scholarships.
