Deltares is an independent institute for applied research in the field of water, subsurface and infrastructure. Throughout the world, we work on smart solutions, innovations and applications for people, environment and society.

Within the Unit Subsurface and Groundwater Systems 25 enthusiastic professionals from the Applied Geology and Geophysics department work on various projects. They work on three major topics: sedimentary dynamics (e.g. fluvial, coastal, estuary and marine); near surface geophysics (on- and offshore) and monitoring and field measurements of the subsurface (from fiber optics to remote sensing).

Medior/Senior Geophysicist (advisor/researcher)



The job

Your main activities are:

  • You work on applied research projects in the field of near surface geophysics in a national and international setting;
  • You work on onshore and offshore projects using multiple geophysical methods, including acoustic, electrical- and electromagnetic;
  • Your work will include data acquisition, -processing and -interpretation;
  • You develop the capabilities of Deltares related to near surface geophysics for finding resources and identifying heterogeneity below large infrastructures in deltaic settings;
  • You work on wave propagation through solid media determining seismic risks on critical infrastructure;
  • You lead and participate in the creative process for applying near surface geophysics in unconventional settings;
  • You work in research teams, collaborating with internal and external parties (national and international) as a team member and/or as a team leader;
  • You help to acquire new applied research- and specialized consultancy projects;
  • You review results of geophysical projects and improve quality of applied methods and workflows;
  • Publish and present research results at international conferences and workshops.

Your profile

  • MSc degree or preferably a PhD degree in geophysics or physics;
  • You have a minimum work experience of 5 years and a track record in applied geophysics including data acquisition, processing and -interpretation (experience with acoustic data specifically is an advantage);
  • A proven affinity with applied research and you are keen to you keep a close eye on scientific developments;
  • You enjoy working in the field, in national and international settings, on- and offshore;
  • You have an international network to support your efforts;
  • You have the ambition to develop yourself as an international specialist;
  • You can monitor projects from proposal to final product, you can formulate customer requirements in terms of project planning to arrive at a final result that enjoys wide support;
  • you can lead a team and are also a team player, you know how to inspire young researchers to come up with innovative and creative solutions.

The team

The Unit Subsurface and Groundwater Systems (BGS) conducts research and provides specialist advisory services on matters relating to groundwater and the subsurface for government authorities and the corporate sector. The essence of our work is the development-, application- and sharing of knowledge in partnerships with universities, other research institutions, governmental agencies and businesses alike.

BGS has 120 employees divided over five departments, Applied Geology and Geophysics (TGG); Urban Water and Subsurface (SWB); Geo-Environmental Research Laboratory (GMOL), Groundwater Management (GWB) and Subsurface and Groundwater Quality (BGK).
