Three PostDoctoral Positions in Geophysical
- Petrological Modelling



The Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) invites applications for three Post-Doctoral Researcher positions. The positions are within the framework of the Science Foundation Ireland funded project iTHERC, aimed at integrated, multi-scale, THermoChemical modelling of the crust and lithospheric mantle in the North Atlantic region, with a special focus on onand off-shore Ireland. The research will involve multi-scale seismic, gravity and EM imaging of the crust and upper mantle of Ireland and the North Atlantic. The problems posed are both fundamental (structure and evolution of the crust, mantle lithosphere and underlying mantle; current and past lithospheric deformation and mantle dynamics across northern Atlantic; tectonics of the western margin of Eurasia) and application-oriented, of economic relevance (establishing the structure of the crust at rifted basins as related to the assessment and exploration of natural resources, and thermal evolution of the overlaying sedimentary blanket).

The candidates will join the recently established, growing group of integrated geophysicalpetrological modelling in DIAS. The research will be in close collaboration with other groups in DIAS (Seismology, Global modelling, Marine Geophysics). The positions are funded for 2 years. The initial appointment will be for 1 year, with an extension for a second year subject to satisfactory performance. The starting date for all three positions is November 1, 2016, or as soon as possible after that (flexible). The starting salary will be €33,975 - €42,394 per year, depending on experience, plus benefits. Consideration of applications will begin on September 10 and continue until the positions are filled. Post-Doctoral researcher 1 (PD1): 3D thermochemical structure of Ireland and North Atlantic.

Salary: 33,975-42,394 EUR (depending on experience and qualification)
Duration: (1+1 years)

A position for a geophysicist with expertise in lithospheric imaging using seismic, gravity or magnetotelluric data. Experience jointly modelling two or more geophysical data sets will be positively evaluated. Experience in data processing and strong computational skills are required. Familiarity with the tectonic setting in the North Atlantic and/or British Isles is desirable although not a requirement. The successful candidate will conduct geophysicalpetrological modelling (forward and inversion) to determine the 3D thermochemical structure of the North Atlantic with a focus on Ireland and surroundings. He or she will use the existing tools in the group and will develop them further. The method will be applied to the abundant new data and models now available, including seismic surface-wave measurements, receiver functions, reflection & refraction active seismics, gravity and geoid anomalies, satellite gravity gradients, airborne EM and magnetic data, magnetotelluric data, surface heat flow, crustal and mantle xenoliths.Collaboration with PDF1 and PDF2 is expected and therefore teamwork ability is required.

Post-Doctoral researcher 2 (PD2): Integrated geophysical-petrological modelling of the upper mantle electrical conductivity and lithospheric magnetic field.

Duration: (1+1 years)

A position for a geophysicist with expertise in electromagnetic imaging technics and/or crustal magnetic modelling. Expertise in scientific software development is required. Familiarity with spherical magnetic modelling, EM forward solvers based on time series for ionospheric (Sq), magnetospheric (Dst) and ocean tides magnetic sources (time and frequency approaches) is desirable. The successful candidate will use and develop further existing geophysical-petrological modelling tools in the group, so as to consistently integrate electromagnetic observables in 3D and mineral physics. The main goal is to model the distribution of volatiles, melt and the crustal magnetic structure in the North Atlantic area, with a focus on Ireland and surroundings. Collaboration with PDF2 and PDF3 is expected and therefore teamwork ability is required.

Post-Doctoral researcher 3 (PD3): Integrated geophysical-petrological geodynamic modelling of basins.

Salary: 33,975-42,394 EUR (depending on experience and qualification)
Duration: (1+1 years)

A position for an Earth scientist with geological and/or geophysical experience in basin analysis. Experience in tectonic interpretation of seismic reflection lines and wide-angle seismic tomographic models, and extensional tectonics is required. The successful applicant will develop an integrative and quantitative 3D approach to model the geodynamical evolution of basins based on self-consistent thermal, compositional and rheological considerations. This new tool will be developed building upon the software for geophysicalpetrological lithospheric imaging already available in the group. Computational and coding experience will be considered an advantage. The new tool will be applied to study the possible evolutionary scenarios of Irish off-shore basins (e.g. Porcupine basin, Celtic Sea basin) in the context of the thermochemical and rheological structure of the North Atlantic region, and to address questions related to their formation processes (i.e. rift-related magmatism, serpentinization, associated uplift/subsidence). Collaboration with PDF2 and PDF3 is expected and therefore teamwork ability is required.

Qualifications:

  • Applicants must hold a PhD or an equivalent degree within Tectonics/Geodynamics/Geophysics.
  • Evidence of the ability to present and publish the result of research at an international level and documented research potential.
  • Ability to conduct independent research.
  • Proficiency in both written and oral English.
