Post-Doctoral position in seismology and petrological
modelling of the lithosphere

Position: Post-Doctoral Researcher in Seismology and Petrological Modelling, Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies
Duration: One year, initially, with a strong possibility of extension, subject to funding confirmation
Salary: 36,489 - 43,394 in the first year, depending on experience and qualifications, with annual increments thereafter.
Start date: as soon as possible.

The successful candidate will join the active, growing research group at DIAS working on seismic imaging and petrological modelling of the lithosphere and underlying mantle. We do global and regional tomography using the fundamental and higher modes of Rayleigh and Love waves and invert the data for seismic-velocity structure and anisotropy. We address the inverse-problem non-uniqueness by means of Bayesian (MCMC) inversions. We model and invert seismic and other data using methods of computational petrology, in collaboration with Dr Javier Fullea and his group at DIAS. This project will capitalize on the high imaging resolution yielded by our massive global datasets and on our recently developed seismic and petrological inversion methods. The focus will be on the application of the methods (with tuning and further development, as appropriate), targeting new insights into the mechanisms of the lithospheric dynamics and evolution, at scales from global to regional.

Qualifications: a PhD in geophysics or related field is required. Substantial computing and programming experience and a good command of English are essential. Substantial research experience and proven publication record are preferred, but recent PhDs with strong relevant expertise will also be considered. Experience in the seismic imaging of the lithosphere is desirable.

To apply: e-mail a complete academic CV, including a list of publications, a statement of research interests, and the names and contact details of 3 academic referees to Dr. Sergei Lebedev (sergei@cp.dias.ie), with "Postdoctoral position" in the subject line. Consideration of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. For additional information on the projects please contact Dr. Sergei Lebedev (sergei@cp.dias.ie).

DIAS is an equal opportunity employer.
