Job Description
We would like to appoint a full-time postdoctoral research scientist at Durham University to model river avulsions and the sedimentary architecture of fluvial systems in the Himalayan foreland. The successful candidate will work with Prof Alexander Densmore (Durham) and Prof Sanjeev Gupta (Imperial College) on a project entitled 'The structure and dynamics of groundwater systems in northwestern India', funded by the NERC Changing Water Cycle programme. The aim of the project is to develop a quantitative understanding of the groundwater system in the states of Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan in northwestern India, and of the response of the system to likely climate changes over the next 50 yr. The overall project involves (i) characterisation of buried channel system aquifers in northwestern India, using shallow geophysics, drilling and stratigraphic analysis, (ii) numerical modelling of channel system evolution and geometry, (iii) isotopic characterisation of groundwater and determination of water velocities and residence times, and (iv) modelling of groundwater flow. This post will contribute primarily to aspects (ii) and (iv), but will work closely with all team members. The successful applicant will be based in the Department of Geography, Durham University, but will also spend periods of time at Imperial College London, and with Indian colleagues at IIT Kanpur, Delhi University, and NIH Roorkee.
The anticipated start date is 1 October 2013, and the post will run for 22 months. Completion of the PhD is required by the start date.
Applications are particularly welcome from women and black and minority ethnic candidates, who are under-represented in academic posts in the University.
