University of Edinburgh,
School of GeoSciences

Postdoctoral Research Associate in Gas Geochemistry

Grade/Salary Scale: UE07 (£30,424 - £36,298)

We are seeking a highly talented candidate to investigate the geochemical composition of captured CO2. The successful candidate will investigate the natural tracer fingerprint (noble gas, C and O stable isotope) of captured CO2 and determine if this fingerprint is sufficient to track the fate of CO2 in the subsurface and resolve ownership of the CO2. The chosen applicant will be responsible for the collection and analysis of captured CO2 samples from the UKCCSRC PACT facilities in Sheffield, UK, industrial pilot capture plants at Ferrybridge and Aberthaw in the UK, as well as from the Boundary Dam capture plant and the Aquistore storage site in Canada. The selected candidate will be required to analyse and interpret the data from these samples in order to meet the specific objectives of the project and to report results to the funders EPSRC and the industrial project partners.

The role is based jointly between the School of GeoSciences, University of Edinburgh and the Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre, East Kilbride. The successful applicant will join Scottish Carbon Capture and Storage (SCCS), which is the largest group in the UK researching CCS technologies. SCCS currently holds ~£12M in active research grants and has established excellent links between academia and industry, with 10 core consortium sponsors and a further 20 industry and businesses involved in Joint Industry Projects. These partners represent the entire CCS chain, from power generators, through capture engineering and pipeline operators, to oil companies and sector analysts.

Fixed Term: 24 months
