We are looking for a qualified structural geologist with strong interest in thermo-mechanical modelling of deformation structures to fill a fixed-term (non-tenure track, 2-year renewable, 6-year maximum) Assistent(in)/ Oberassistent(in) position in the Geological Institute of the ETH Zürich. A completed Doctorate degree and an established basis in modern field techniques and numerical methods are required. The main duties will be to (1) pursue his (her) own research as well as collaborative research with other members of the department in any of the following topics: structural geology and tectonics, development of small and large scale structures, relationship between exhumation and tectonics (2) manage research programs for Ph.D. and M.Sc. students and post-docs, (3) obtain the necessary funding and (4) have a strong involvement in undergraduate teaching programmes and one-on-one tutoring (thesis supervision). Expertise and facilities exist for studies of rock fabrics, numerical and analogue modelling and experimental rock deformation. Current field-based projects are concentrated geographically within the Alps and the Himalayas. Several such projects involve close collaboration with members of the Petrology and Geophysics Institutes. Process-oriented projects include studies of orogenic syntaxes, fold initiation and propagation, fold interference patterns, the development of crystallographic preferred orientations, high T flow of single and polyphase aggregates and high shear strain deformation.
