PhD position in experimental petrology and geophysics

The Institute of Geochemistry and Petrology of ETH Zürich invites applications for a 3 year PhD position to be filled in autumn/winter 2017. Applicants should hold a MSc degree in earth sciences or physics.

The project aims for a better understanding of the interior structure of Mars by combining results from phase equilibrium experiments at martian mantle conditions with thermodynamic and geophysical modelling. The main focus of the work will be on experimental methods, therefore, the successful candidate must have strong practical skills, however, an affinity to solving mathematical and thermodynamic problems will certainly help to master the modelling part of this project.

Applicants should send their CV, a short abstract on research interests and contact information of two referees as a single PDF-file to Dr. Christian Liebske (christian.liebske@erdw.ethz.ch) and Prof. James Connolly (james.connolly@erdw.ethz.ch).
