PhD Positions in Experimental Petrology/Geochemistry at ETH Zurich

The Institute of Geochemistry and Petrology invites applications for a PhD position with a topic on volatiles s.l. in the early Earth or any rocky planet. Candidates should have either experimental or analytical experience, but most important is a strong interest in modern geochemistry and in thermodynamics.

The PhD thesis will make use of a unique, very high temperature furnace that permits the direct investigation of peridotitic melts and the geochemical behavior of materials typical of planetary mantles as well as melts of refractory systems. These experiments will be applied to better understand the high temperature geochemistry and distribution of volatile elements during the formation of the Earth and other rocky planets. The candidate should demonstrate a keen willingness to invest considerable time into the development of experimental protocols.

Prospective applicants should hold an MSc in the broad field of physical sciences. The successful candidates are expected to fulfil some laboratory and/or teaching duties. The position is be filled as soon as a suitable candidate is found, the starting date should be within 2019. The annual salary is 47’000 CHF.

At ETH, PhD completion is expected within 3½-4 years. Inquiries or applications in form of a single pdf-file including a brief statement of research interest to max.schmidt@erdw.ethz.ch or paolo.sossi@erdw.ethz.ch.
