PhD in Experimental Impact Cratering

The MEMIN Research Unit is offering a three-year PhD Position (E13 65%) at the Department of Geology, University of Freiburg.

We are searching for a student with a degree in geosciences, preferably with a background in structural geology or material sciences. You will be part of a multi-disciplinary team of researchers and PhD students from seven institutes in Germany working on experimental impact cratering within the DFG Forschergruppe" FOR 887.

The focus of the PhD position lies in the evaluation of laboratory-scale impact craters formed in geological materials. Experiments will be performed at the facilities of the Fraunhofer Ernst-Mach-Institute in Freiburg. During the experiments, mm to cm sized projectiles are accelerated to over 5 km/s into target rocks. The processes that form the crater, excavate and eject target material, and that fragment the rock are of particular interest for this position.

Methods required for the evaluation of the craters include microstructural analysis using optical and scanning electron microscopy for the analysis of ejected materials and of fracturing in the crater subsurface. Crater morphologies will be digitized with 3D laser scanners to create DEMs and calculate crater volumes. Furthermore, a petrographic characterization of the rock targets will be performed.

The MEMIN Research Unit offers PhD students an ideal and unique opportunity to become part of an interactive, multidisciplinary network of scientists in the fields of impact cratering and planetary science. For further information on MEMIN, see http://www.memin.de.
