The GEOMAR | Helmholtz-Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is a German "foundation under public law", financed by both the Federal Republic of Germany and the State Schleswig-Holstein. GEOMAR is one of the leading international organisations in the field of marine sciences, with a current annual budget of about € 60 million and about 750 employees.
Subject to approval the Group "Marine Geodynamics" is pleased to announce the availability of a fixed-term position of a
Research Scientist - PostDoc
(up to E14 TVöD-Bund, for 26 month)
within project SO-226 CHRIMP, starting 01st January 2013.
Project CHRIMP sets out to investigate so called mega-pockmarks at the Chatham Rise, off-shore the South Island, New Zealand. Mega-pockmarks are expected to be responsible for catastrophic Methane release that may have caused the Palaeocene/Eocene temperature maximum (PETM). Functionality and rates of Methane release at such mega structures shall be explained using a multidisciplinary (geo-acoustics, geology, geo-chemistry) data acquisition. The project is undertaken in close co-operation with New Zealand partners.
The candidate will participate in the expedition of R/V SONNE in spring 2013. Project work will be based on processing and interpretation of seismic data from 3D streamer and ocean-bottom seismometer acquisition. In addition sidescan sonar and sub-bottom profiler data will be used.
Profile of qualification:
- doctorate or equivalent University degree
- hands-on expertise in processing and interpretation of multichannel seismic data
- willingness to participate in few weeks long sea going expeditions
- experiences with sidescan sonar data would be a benefit
The GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research seeks to increase the proportion of female scientists and therefore women are especially encouraged to apply. GEOMAR also supports the employment of disabled persons. Persons with disabilities will, with appropriate qualifications and aptitudes, be employed preferentially.
Applications including a CV, a full literature list, names and contact information of two references with the reference code "CHRIMP" should be send not later than 30th September 2012 to:
