Senior Research Scientist in Geophysics

Job Description

A position as a senior research scientist, alternatively as a research scientist, in the field of geophysics is available at the Department of Groundwater and Quaternary Geology Mapping, GEUS in Aarhus. In accordance with the qualifications of the successful applicant, the position will be a research scientist or, preferably, a senior research scientist appointment, if the applicant has the required qualifications. The senior research scientist position is permanent. The research scientist position is initially a four-year appointment with later possibilities for senior evaluation and a permanent position.

The successful applicant will participate in national and international research and advisory projects with particular emphasis on geophysics in relation to geological mapping and modelling. The work will include application of airborne electromagnetic methods and the development of methods for integration of electromagnetic and geological data in the geological modelling work performed at the Department. The position will also involve advisory activities and quality control measures in the context of international electromagnetic mapping projects.

Qualifications

The successful applicant must have a PhD in geophysics and for the senior research scientist position a minimum of 3-4 years of documented research activity at an international level within this field. We seek a geophysicist with in-depth knowledge of geophysical methods applicable to groundwater and geological mapping in particular airborne electromagnetic methods. Utilization of geophysical data on both local and regional scales in relation to groundwater mapping is a key area of research. Thus, experience and interest in the interpretation of geophysical data jointly with other types of geoscientific data is considered important, and a solid knowledge of geology, statistical methods and other related methods is required.

Utilisation of airborne geophysical data has been an integral part of the activities at GEUS for a considerable period of time and is expected to remain a key topic for our national and international groundwater mapping activities in the future. The applicant is expected to participate in projects where airborne electromagnetic data play an important role. Solid understanding of the acquisition, processing and inversion of such data is therefore essential. Good collaboration skills and the ability to work in a large multi-disciplinary team are also considered important.

Furthermore, the applicant must be able to handle large amounts of geoscientific data in a structured and efficient way. Experience and skills in the use of modern computational methods and data visualisation software are required. We expect that the combination of geophysical models with 3D geological modelling will gain a stronger focus at GEUS in the future. We therefore seek a creative scientist who enjoys working both independently and as part of a team, and who is able to attract external funding in the form of research grants or other externally funded projects.

Proficiency in both written and spoken English is essential.

Department of Groundwater and Quaternary Geology Mapping

The Department is located in Aarhus. We are a group of about 20 geologists, geophysicists and geochemists working with many aspects of research and advisory projects related to groundwater mapping and monitoring and near-surface geology. We mainly focus on projects related to the Danish onshore area, but also participate in international projects. We want to extend our focus and expertise in the application of near-surface geophysics, especially with regard to construction of 3D geological models within and beyond Denmark.

The Department collaborates extensively with the Department of Geoscience at Aarhus University and also cooperates with other national and international research institutions and universities as well as national and international authorities. We encourage an informal atmosphere where team spirit and good humour are valued. Occasional social events outside work hours are arranged throughout the year.

We offer:

  • an attractive and creative geo-scientific research environment
  • collaboration with many types of researchers and institutions
  • participation in international research projects and field activities
  • possibility of additional courses and training as required; personal development
  • flexible working conditions and ample opportunities to influence your work situation and the contents of your job
  • a family-friendly work place, located only 6 km from the centre of Aarhus
  • a physical exercise centre with professional assistance located at the workplace
