Senior Research Scientist (or Research Scientist)
in Economic Geology

The Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) has a vacant position as Senior Research Scientist in the general field of economic geology and ore forming processes. Depending on the qualifications of the applicants, the position might be at the level of Research Scientist.

The position is to be filled as soon as possible.

Our vacant position as Senior Adviser in dynamics of mineral resources and raw materials might also be of interest to you.

The position
You will participate in research- and mapping projects predominantly in Greenland, with particular emphasis on mineral occurrences and ore-forming systems. Furthermore you are expected to contribute to ad hoc tasks in our Department of Petrology and Economic Geology, including advisory work to government and industry, and projects under the auspices of Center for Minerals and Materials, MiMa, which is based in the department.

Qualifications
You hold a PhD degree and have a strong background in economic geology. We expect you to have a process-oriented approach to the study of mineral deposits and to utilize methods such as mineralogy, geochemistry, petrology, isotope geochemistry and structural geology as well as field observations in your research. We seek a creative scientist who enjoys working both independently and as part of a team, and who preferably is able to attract external funding as research grants or other externally funded projects.

MiMa - Center for Minerals and Materials
MiMa is a newly established knowledge center, with the aim of providing analyses on supply, demand, scarcity, vulnerability and dynamics of mineral resources and raw materials, both globally and nationally, on behalf of Danish government organisations, industry, and other stakeholders. MiMa will work in close collaboration with similar organisations in Europe and North America. MiMa is based in the department of Petrology and Economic Geology, GEUS, and is staffed mainly from the department and collaboration partners.

Department of Petrology and Economic Geology
The Department of Petrology and Economic Geology mostly works on geo-scientific projects in Greenland, but have recently expanded activities by establishing MiMa in response to a growing demand for knowledge about the global value chain of mineral resources and raw materials to industry and decision makers.

The research activities of the department include the igneous, metamorphic and structural evolution of crystalline complexes, geological mapping, geochronology and ore forming processes and mineral deposits in a variety of geological environments. One of GEUS' core activities is to assist the Greenlandic government in developing a sustainable mineral industry, by providing basic geological data for Greenland, and by providing specific advice to government institutions and to the mineral exploration industry, about the geology of Greenland and about ore forming processes in a Greenlandic context.

The department has extensive collaboration with scientists from universities and research institutions in Denmark and abroad.

The department has a photo-geological laboratory, a scanning electron microscope and a chemical laboratory with a quadrupole ICP-MS, and an Element2 sector-MS with ablation facility.

GEUS is part of Geocenter Denmark which has a large common pool of research facilities including an electron microprobe, a multicollector sector ICP-MS, two conventional mass spectrometers, and XRF facilities. The institutions in the GeoCenter also share PhD and MSc students and collaborative projects may be funded by the GeoCenter.

Place of employment and place of work
The place of employment is the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS), Department of Petrology and Economic Geology in Copenhagen, with extended periods of time spent at the GEUS office in Nuuk.

We offer
  • A good, creative geo-scientific research environment
