Vacancy No. 05/3/10 D

The GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam (GFZ Potsdam) presents, as a member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres, the national Research Centre for Earth Sciences. The international research project SAFOD (San Andreas Fault Oberservatory at Depth) is motivated by the need to answer fundamental questions about the physical and chemical processes controlling faulting and earthquake generation within a major plate-bounding fault. SAFOD was drilled across the San Andreas Fault Zone to a depth of 3.2 km. Within the framework of the sub-project "Examining the relation between mineralogical and geochemical fault rock variations in the San Andreas Fault Zone at SAFOD" the following position will be filled: The Section 3.2 "Geomechanics and Rheology" in Department 3 "Geodynamics" invites applications for a

PhD position (m/f)

for the microstructural investigation of fault damage zone samples.

Tasks:

The successful candidate is invited to perform microstructural investigations on core samples that represent different stages of faulting (e.g. fault gouge, cataclasites). Objectives of the program include characterizing of damage and deformation mechanisms as a function of distance to the active fault trace. For the analysis the applicant will mainly use a combination of optical microscopy (including scanning and high-resolution transmission electron microscope techniques) and texture and residual stress measurement using diffraction methods. The applicant will perform this investigation partly at University of California, Berkeley, USA.

Qualifications:

  • Diploma or masters degree in geosciences with strong background in mineralogy, experience in the use of high-resolution transmission electron microscope techniques.
  • Excellent communication skills in English
