PhD position in Active Tectonics

The Section "Lithosphere Dynamics" in department "Geodynamics and Geomaterials" of the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ), invites applications for a PhD position in the area of Active Tectonics and Instrumental Deformation Analysis.

In the framework of the DFG research program "Megathrust seismicity and upper plate response - deformation transients of the subduction earthquake cycle", the PhD project aims at investigating the spatial and temporal distribution of fault activity in the overriding plate of N-Chile and its relation to the seismic cycle of megathrust earthquakes. The successful candidate will carry out time series analysis of displacement data continuously recorded by the recently installed Creepmeter array which is part of the Integrated Plate Boundary Observatory (IPOC) in N-Chile. The main objective of the work is to compare long-term displacement rates derived from characterization of active fault scarps and surface ruptures in the field with short-term high resolution datasets from the creepmeters. Please contact Dr. Pia Victor (pvictor@gfz-potsdam.de) for additional information concerning the project.

In addition to a Diploma or M.Sc. in geosciences or a related discipline the successful candidate should have a strong background in structural geology and tectonic geomorphology. Experience and interest in field work is mandatory. The willingness to work in an interdisciplinary research environment is a prerequisite, and intensive collaboration with other groups and PhD projects is expected.

The position is limited to a term of 3 years and funded by the German Science Foundation (DFG). Salary will be according to the German civil service remuneration system. Equal opportunity is part of our personnel policy. The GFZ Potsdam encourages applications from qualified female candidates. In case of equal personal aptitudes and qualification, disabled persons will be given priority.

Complete applications will include a CV, a short motivation letter including research interests and accomplishments, and the names and contact details, including e-mail address, of at least two potential referees (all combined within a single PDF document).

Applications should be directed under the reference number 08/3/10 D to the Helmholtz-Zentrum Potsdam, Deutsches GeoForschungsZentrum, Personal und Sozialwesen, Telegrafenberg, D-14473 Potsdam, Germany
