Vacancy No. 20/3/12 D
The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam, German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), is the national Research Centre for Geosciences in Germany and a member of the Helmholtz Association. The Helmholtz-University Young Investigators Group (YIG) is located in the Department 3 "Geodynamics", Section 3.2 "Geomechanics and Rheology". As part of the DFG priority programme ICDP we will fill a
PhD position (m/f)
related to the ICDP-GONAF project (www.gonaf.de):
Automated identification and timing of crustal phases for tomographic studies and applications to the Marmara region in NW Turkey
The YIG "From Microseismicity to Large Earthquakes: Studies Related to Seismic Hazard Assessment, Carbon Sequestration and Sustainable Resource Management" addresses different seismological topics focussing on the analysis of natural and induced microseismicity data sets in close collaboration with the Free University Berlin and Stanford University.
The successful candidate is invited to perform software developments to automatic phase identification as well as tomographic studies inverting regional seismic recordings from the Marmara region. The investigation aims at providing improved identification of crustal and uppermost mantle phases as input parameters to determine the 3D-velocity structure of the Marmara region. Results are expected to refine the understanding of the seismotectonic setting of the region where a major (M>7) earthquake is expected close to the Istanbul metropolitan region in the near future.
- Diploma or Master of Sciences in Geophysics or Physics with strong background in seismology.
- Experience in the analysis of digitial waveform recordings and good programming skills (preferably MATLAB, C/C++).
- Ability and willingness to work in an interdisciplinary and international environment.
