Vacancy No. 18/5/13 G

The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national Research Centre for Geosciences in Germany and a member of the Helmholtz Association. The Department 5 "Earth Surface Processes", Section 5.4 "Hydrology", invites applications for a

Post-Doc Position (m/f)

with the focus on hydro-gravimetry

The analysis of flood hazard and associated uncertainties is a research focus of Section 5.4. Probabilistic methods are developed and applied on different scales with a focus on large scale application. Particular attention is paid to the influence of flood protection measure and their failure probabilities on the flood hazard in larger river systems.

Within the joint German-Chinese research project DELIGHT Section 5.4 investigates the flood hazard for the Delta of the Yellow River in China. In this particular context the joint probabilities of storm surges, wave heights and tides need to be investigated. Also the failure probability of the existing flood defenses leading to inundation of the Delta need to be estimated. The inundation process will be explicitly simulated with a 2-dimensional hydrodynamic model. The position is subject to the outstanding final project grant. Furthermore, the project will be evaluated after the first year for funding of the remaining 2 years.

Changes of the water cycle from local to global scales are subject of research in Section 5.4. In the field of hydro-gravimetry, ground- and satellite-based gravimetric techniques are applied to assess variations in continental water storage. The application of (super-conducting) gravimeters as an innovative hydrological tool is developed in ongoing and future research activities in close co-operation with Department 1 (Geodesy and Remote Sensing).

Tasks:

  • Development of (super-conducting) gravimeters as hydrological monitoring devices
  • Signal processing and signal separation for time-variable gravity data time series (satellite- and ground-based gravimetry)
  • Analysis of water storage variations based on gravimetric and complementary data and hydro-geophysical modelling
  • Design and analysis of hydro-gravimetric monitoring networks
  • Strong support in the writing of proposals in order to gain third party funding
  • Co-supervision of PhD students
  • Presentation and publication of scientific results

Qualifications:

  • PhD in the field of hydrology, geodesy, geophysics, environmental sciences or similar disciplines
  • Experimental background and experience with field hydrology and/or gravimetric techniques (GRACE, gravimeter)
  • Experience with local and/or global hydrological modelling
  • Willingness to work in the field
  • Programming skills (e.g., R, IDL or Matlab)
  • Good publication record
  • Motivation to work in a multi-disciplinary team
  • Good command of English language, German is an asset
  • Driver's license

Starting Date: 1st July 2013
Duration: 3 years
