Scientist - Fluid Geochemist

Lower Hutt, New Zealand
We are seeking a fluid geochemist to work in the Marine Geoscience Department, at GNS Science, Lower Hutt, Wellington. The successful candidate will be responsible for an Ion Chromatograph-Mass Spectrometer (IC-MS) and will contribute to research on understanding processes associated with the formation of seafloor hydrothermal systems and their associated massive sulfide mineralization in the New Zealand region, and elsewhere. This is a full-time permanent position. GNS Science is a Crown Research Institute (CRI) owned by the New Zealand Government and is New Zealand's largest geological science organisation. It provides geological, geophysical and isotopic research and consultancy services to government and industries within New Zealand and overseas.

Significant growth in research related to New Zealand's offshore mineral deposits, specifically those related to hydrothermal vent sites associated with submarine volcanoes, means that GNS is looking to expand its Offshore Minerals group. We are seeking someone who:
  • Has a PhD, preferably with post-doctoral experience
  • Is an inorganic chemist with proven experience in fluid analyses, particularly ion chromatography
  • Experience with seafloor hydrothermal vent systems and oceanographic expeditions is preferable
  • Is willing and able to go to sea to collect samples
  • Has the ability to publish high quality papers in international journals
If you are a team player with a "can do" attitude, passionate about earth and oceanographic science and want to work for a dynamic, progressive and multi-cultural organisation then GNS could be the place for you.

Closing date: Sunday, 10 June 2012.
