The Faculty of Geosciences and Geography at the Georg-August-University Göttin-gen is offering a
Professorship (W3) in Geobiology
We are looking for an established scientist to head the Geobiology Department (which comprises three other professorships) at the Geosciences Center (GZG). The successful candidate should bring international attention to the research and teaching program of the faculty and have a clear focus on basic geobiological research with an emphasis on organisms as geobiological study objects. At the same time, he/she should be aware of the possibilities offered for the investigation of such objects and their context by molecular, isotopic and geochemical methods, which are currently employed within the department. The successful candidate's research program would also include a field-based component. This fieldwork aspect should also be brought into the associated teaching responsibilities of the position, e.g. in the framework of excursions and field exercises. We envisage a candidate with a research portfolio that has an emphasis on fossil habitats and organisms, their evolutionary history, and their interactions with the environment. A synergy with at least one of the faculty's focus areas ("Geo- logical Archives" and/or "Early Earth") is also desired. In this context, a coherent research concept with genuine connections to the working groups of the Depart- ment of Geobiology and the neighbouring departments of the GZG must be provided.
While the research focus of all candidates should clearly be on geological themes, links to current societal challenges, notably global change and the changes in climate, biodiversity and ecosystems associated with anthropogenic activities are desirable. The person to be appointed should have good connections (including methodical) to these current topics, e.g. by examining recent analog systems or experimental research components. This also applies to teaching, where integration into the degree programs MSc/BSc Geosciences, BSc Geography and BSc Ecosystem Management will be important.
We are looking for a creative and cooperative personality who conducts innovative research, and can collaborate within and beyond the faculty. We offer attractive staffing and analytical infrastructure at one of the leading geoscientific locations in Germany. Prerequisite is the ability to provide excellent research-oriented teaching, an outstanding internationally visible publication activity, proven acquisition of external funding and a habilitation or a habilitation equivalent qualification.
The University of Göttingen aims for a higher proportion of women in areas in which they have previously been underrepresented. Qualified female scientists are therefore particularly encouraged to apply. Handicapped persons will be preferred given the same qualifications and suitability. Applications with the usual documents (curriculum vitae, certificates, list of publications, teaching experience, a research plan, an overview of acquired third-party funds) are requested in electronic format (PDF) by 28th June, 2020.
